Sustaining our World – Water

Lesson Intention

Students will explore the effects and potential consequences of water overuse.

Success Criteria

You will know you have been successful when you can:

# Identify the effects of the over use of water.

# Create a plan to conserve water.

Instructions

Writers Notebook Task – record all the ways you have used water today. Take a photo of your work and send it to me in Microsoft Teams.

2. Answer these questions about the video in the blog comments.

  • Why is only a tiny percentage of the world’s water suitable for humans to drink?
  • Why is it worrying that humans are eating more meat than ever before?
  • Why are old pipes under large cities contributing to water wastage?

3. Look at the poster below.

Resource – Water Overuse

4. Answer these questions using Classdojo Portfolios.

  • What does this poster tell us about how humans are currently using water?
  • What might happen if humans continue to use water in this way?
  • Which of the facts on the poster did you find the most surprising? Why?

5. Suggest possible actions in response to a particular problem or challenge. You are then encouraged to consider the possible effects of these actions and make a decision about the best solution to implement.

Showbie – GPA2 – Sustainability – Graphic Organiser

Households in developed countries are using too much water. Encourage the class to brainstorm and choose one suggested action that people could take to solve (or reduce) the problem. Write this in the first ‘Suggested action’ box e.g. Everyone must reduce their shower times to 3 minutes. Then, brainstorm and choose two possible effects of this action and write these in the first two ‘Possible effect’ boxes e.g. Household water use will reduce significantly and More water will become available for other uses.
