Sustaining our World – Deforestation

Lesson Intention

Students will explore the effects and potential consequences of deforestation.

Success Criteria

You will know you’ve been successful when you can:

# Give a definition for deforestation. (State what it means.)

# Explain how animals and the climate are affected due to deforestation.

Instructions

  1. Watch the video Climate 101: Deforestation

2. Respond to the questions below in comments. Remember to copy and paste each question before you answer it.

  • What is deforestation?
  • How does deforestation contribute to climate change?
  • How are plants and animals being affected by deforestation?

3. Look at the Deforestation Poster.  Create a video to answer the three questions and upload to Classdojo portfolios.

 Deforestation Poster

  • What does this poster tell us about how humans are currently using forests?
  • What might happen if humans continue to use forests in this way?
  • Which of the facts on the poster did you find the most surprising? Why?

Extension Task – include in your video (as above)

Create a summary sentence or paragraph which explains why deforestation is a significant environmental issue in the 21st century.

  1. What is deforestation?
Deforestation is cutting down all of the tree source in forests, and wrecking animals and plants homes.

  2. How does deforestation contribute to climate change?
There is more of a pesific green house gas, called corbone dioxide.

  3. How are plants and animals being affected by deforestation?
Their homes are being wrecked/destroyed and they can not survive
Without shelter or the source it use to survive.

  4. What is deforestation? Deforestation is when big companies and people cut down lots of trees in our forests to make supplies like toilet paper, paper and lots of packaging of our products and they don’t replant the forest and if they do they take a very long time to grow.

How does deforestation contribute to climate change?
Without the trees there would be no oxygen we would be unable to breathe fresh air. The trees eat up all the carbon dioxide and give us nice fresh air to live and be happy with no trees the planet would start to die.

How are plants and animals being affected by deforestation? Plants and animals are being hugely affected by deforestation as it by cutting down trees it is taking away animals habitats that’s their house their food and their shelter and their safety. They will all end up dead.

  5. What is deforestation?
Deforestation is when people kut down trees.
How does deforestation contribute to climate change?
It is killing thsands of animals a day.
How are plants and animals being affected by deforestation?
It is killing where they live.

  6. What is deforestation?it is where we cut down all the trees and where animal live and where we get oxygen and we are just making the rainforest bad
How does deforestation contribute to climate change?because of the fires it his made it bigger.
Which of the facts on the poster did you find the most surprising? Why? Because it is there home and we are killing it.

  7. What is deforestation? Deforestation is making animals lose homes in the wild because some live in trees and trees are being destroyed for homes fire to keep warm .

How does deforestation contribute to climate change? It’s making climate change happen a lot more because trees are being cut down and trees help people breathe we are cutting our own air supply off.

How are plants and animals are being affected by deforestation ? The animals stay safe with trees and some live in trees and there are going to be know trees left at this rate.

  8. What does this poster tell us about how humans are currently using forests?
Humans are not using flora and fauna are responsibly, we should be smart the way we chop down trees and eliminate forests. We can do this by re-planting New trees so then they can reproduce.

What might happen if humans continue to use forests in this way?
Through the years things can change drastically, animals can live without a home and possibly die and we won’t have enough oxygen for everyone so we can all to breath well.

Which of the facts on the poster did you find the most surprising? Why?
I found my surprising that a football field size forest is destroyed every two seconds. I am ashamed of what humans are doing to the earth. Every two seconds is unnecessary. I don’t think that we need to be this desperate. Animals are more desperate at this time right now.

  9. What is deforestation?
deforestation is when they take down heaps of trees at a time.
How does deforestation contribute to climate change?
we too much greenhouse gases and then climate change will go rapidly.
How are plants and animals being affected by deforestation?
when they take down the trees I take down plants and animals with them.

  10. What is deforestation?
Deforestation is when you cut down all the trees which your not only killing earth but your also ruining animals habitat

How does deforestation contribute to climate change?
Because trees produce oxygen and when you cut down trees you are basically cutting off your own oxygen

Which of the facts on the poster did you find the most surprising? Why?
The most surprising to me was that we are destroying the same amount of trees that would cover the same amount of 30 football fields every minute!

  11. How does deforestation contribute to climate change?

Green house gas that is called carbon dioxide

  12. How are plants and animals being affected by deforestation?
It’s killing them and we’re they live

  13. What is deforestation?
Deforestation is basically when farmers cut down forest for agriculture, loggers cut down forests for resources , or any other reason that doesn’t benefit the animals who’s habitat is in the rainforest. I believe deforestation is stupid because we’re also harming ourselves, because we are cutting of our own oxygen source.

How does deforestation contribute to climate change?
Deforestation contributors to climate change because of many reasons firstly when we cut down trees the carbon dioxide that was stored inside the tree is unleashed, Which then goes makes more greenhouse gas emissions, secondly 24% of climate change comes from agriculture and forestry.

How are plants and animals being affected by deforestation?
When we cut down trees, animals homes are destroyed and some people think that f4,000 to 6000 species of animals go extinct each year.

  14. What is deforestation?
Deforestation is cutting down lots of trees.

How does deforestation contribute to climate change?
Forestation contributes to climate change by letting out more greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and they do not get sucked in by trees enough.

How are plants and animals being affected by deforestation?
Their homes are getting destroyed by deforestation and when they have time to build other habitats they get destroyed as well.
