Reading Task -What-are-Earthquakes

  1. Read the text ‘What are Earthquakes?’
  2. Complete the Questions on page 3.
  3. Answer the questions below in blog comments.

  • What type of words are used in this text?
  • Why do you think the author chose these types of words?
  • If these words were removed from the text, what might be the effect of this?

  1. Some of the words out of a text are after-shock, magnitude, earthquakes, geologist, tectonic plates, focus, Richter scale, epicentre foreshocks, seismic and fault lines. Most of these are descriptive words. Because They are describing what happens in an earthquake.

    The author chose these words as they are all used to describe earthquakes and how they happen.

    If these words were removed we wouldn’t understand what the authors is trying to tell us.

    The words in the text are descriptive, for example… crunches, results, shaking, minor.
    If these words were removed from the text, what might be the effect of this?
    If the words were removed from the text, it would of been harder for us to get a good understanding from parts of this text.

    Why do you think the author chose these types of words?
    I think the author chose these words because the text about earthquakes needs that type of descriptive words.

  3. 1. The author used technical words like crust,epicentre, foreshock seismic waves, Aftershock, Seismograph.

    2. The author chose these words because they were earthquake words.

    3. If these words were removed from the text we will not understand the topic.
