Science Experiment

Learning Intention

We are learning about chemical reactions.

Success Criteria

You will know you have been successful when you can:

#Write out the scientific method for this experiment.

#Accurately describe what happened when the oil and water came into contact with each other.

#Research information about oil and water. Explain what happens when the two substances meet. (Record your information in comments)

Mixing Oil and Water

Some things just don’t get along well with each other. Take oil and water as an example, you can mix them together and shake as hard as you like but they’ll never become friends…..or will they? Take this fun experiment a step further and find out how bringing oil and water together can help you do your dishes.

What you’ll need:

  • Small soft drink bottle
  • Water
  • Food colouring
  • 2 tablespoons of cooking oil
  • Dish washing liquid or detergent

Instructions:

  1. Add a few drops of food colouring to the water.
  2. Pour about 2 tablespoons of the coloured water along with the 2 tablespoons of cooking oil into the small soft drink bottle.
  3. Screw the lid on tight and shake the bottle as hard as you can.
  4. Put the bottle back down and have a look, it may have seemed as though the liquids were mixing together but the oil will float back to the top.

Results: what happened? Take a photo and add this to your written work.

Conclusion: Was you hypothese correct? Why/why not?

Scientific Method – scaffold.

Please use the scaffold as a guide and rewrite this experiment in Pages then submit your work to Showbie GP2.

  1. When oil and water meet the oil is to big so it gets pushed to the top. And the oil is lighter than the water.

  2. The water molecules attract each other, and the oil molecules stick together. That causes oil and water to form two separate layers. Water molecules pack closer together, so they sink to the bottom, leaving oil sitting on top of the water. 👍🏻👍🏻

  4. #Accurately describe what happened when the oil and water came into contact with each other.

When the oil and water met it bubbled a little and than it rose to the top of the bottle and than stayed there.

  5. oil and water do not mix the molecules of water can’t mix with the molecules of oil even if you try to shake up a bottle of half oil and half water the oil just breaks up into smaller drops.
